What scooby to buy?
Hello there wanted a scooby since I was a kid but only just started being able to afford one mainly due to ridicules insurance lol. Have just started properly looking into them and am getting pretty confused between what model to get.
Things I do no:
Going to get a first gen
Going to get a 2L turbo
Things I'm not sure on:
What years ecu's are remapable
Get an Import or not (insurance is roughly the same)
There basically the two questions I need some help on, have seen some nice ones around the 2k mark that's about my budget really
Thanks

Other things you need to take in to account.
Can I afford to buy one - Yup
Can I afford to Insure it - Yup
Can I afford to run it (Petrol, tyres, brakes etc....) ????
If you go remap and you have just hit a barrier when you can afford insurance, it will be even more with a remap.

I will be able to afford the running cost as I no when my salary is going up at work and got a rise end of this month, the main reason I want to no what years ecus you can remap is so I can future proof it so when I get other rises and start remapping I don't hit an expensive brick wall
And the insurance isn't the same there's about £100 in it

I'd go JDM then personally. Finding a good unabused one will be the challenge.
I sold my totally standard 1996 WRX back in 2006. Saw in on AT 5 year later and it looked like it had been crashed into Halfords. Miraculously lost 30k miles too. Heartbreaking stuff!
Good luck with the hunt.

This is going to sound like a proper noob question but what are the JDM Subaru's standard turbo? Are they TD04 or 5? Reason I ask is because I have seen one with a TD05 on and wondering if it was standard or has been change
And aren't we on the scoobynet forum tubbytommy? Lol

Right done some more research and from what I can see
Years 92 - 98 you have to get a daughter board from ESL £295+vat+map
Years 99 - 00 you have to get a daughter board from Ecutec £550+vat+map
Does this sound about right?

Year 92 - 00 daughter board from alcatec gets rid of MAF sensor. £880 supplied, fitted and custom mapped also can get launch control + anti lag for £150 more

Right just watched a YouTube video and answered my own question there haha. That's pretty impressive!!! And also brings up a few more questions these being:
If I bought a subaru 97/98 with ESL already on it but with out the additional features would I be able to pay £100 to get them added on or is it a bit more involved than that?
Also I no I asked earlier if the JDM subarus have TD05 turbos as standard but do the UK versions 97/98 have them as standard as well?
Thanks

Ok sweet thank you for the info, have heard the Td05-18g are one of the best ones to go for if picking a turbo would you agree? Think I may go for a JDM 97/98 will be looking out for the knocking on start up though

Set your power goal and then select the smallest turbo to achieve it to get best response. The td05-16g is a great turbo, robust, direct fit, 330hp achievable on pump fuel all else being well and I've bought working ones for £50.
ESL also has twin maps so a cheap way to extra power is to run a 20% methanol mix map. We got 550hp out of a stock location GT30 with 20% meth, it makes a big difference and is cheaper to buy than SUL.

That sounds good to me! I'm aiming for 300 mark so will just keep the TD05-16g.
One more question sorry to bore you haha but as import cars are a bit all over the place when it comes to documents is there any easy ways to visually tell if the car is a 97/98?
Thanks
