I believe the goal is to set them up with minimal "preload" on the ARB when the car isn't rolling. With that in mind, you really need the car on ramps so you can install the links with everything under normal load, and adjust so that the ARB isn't strained at all.
Chevron fitted mine, and when I've undone them to make adjustments - the ARB hasn't sprung back at all like it did when I had solid non adjustable links previously.
