Default Help! Engine Warning light and problems

Good Afternoon Folks!

I have a 2006 Hawkeye WRX STI which has been running well till this morning.

I was driving (max 1 mile) when I notice the yellow engine warning light was illuminated on the dash so I pulled over and heard a whirling noise from the engine bay.

I turned everything off, popped the bonnet and located the problem, it seems like some sort of pump/motor but I've struggled to find any information on it. Its in the top right corner of the engine bay as you look at it. Next to the fuse box.

I disconnected the battery and reconnected, soon as the terminal is in contact it starts up again, smells like its burning a little, running dry?

Ive left the car with the battery off as not to cause further damage. It only started when it started the car this morning, it had stood for about 36 hours previously and was sound on the last drive.

Ive inserted a link to the part in question.

Any help would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Its the air pump for the cold running emissions system, usually only runs for a few minutes on cold starts then turns off, there is a connection plug coming from it, 2 large wires, only 20cm from the pump, disconnect there if you want to run the car, no harm will be done running without, you can remove the whole system & blank it off on the rear of the heads, then have it switched off via the ecu so no engine light appears.

Thanks for the replies!

Will it have an impact on the MOT with it been used for emissions?

I'm off to work Monday so looks like it will be waiting for a while!

I've heard that the secondary air pump is only for cold emission control..........in California?
