induction kit or not?????
Hi people,
This is my first post on here so please be gentle
I have a 2004 wrx with decat up pipe, sport cat down pipe and 3rd cat removed. Its been remapped and boosting at 19psi.
I have just removed the BOV (came on the car when I bought it) and put a standard BPV valve back on (I didn't like all the backfires).
I'm not expecting any power gains, however I would like to hear the induction growl and "whoosh" from the standard recirc valve. I have removed the airbox silencer but would like a bit more.
What are peoples thoughts on this?
I know its probably a waste of money in most peoples eyes, but just on the basis of sound and smile factor.
Thanks and Happy New Year

Generally I think its considered a bit of a no no as many aftermarket induction kits can affect the MAF, which can be a fairly expensive item to replace as well as having the potential to do further damage.
There must be some decent ones out there now that will work with a MAF, (perhaps an inner wing job). However it may well be the car should be mapped accordingly for this mod, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will confirm.

Thanks for the replies.
I have been looking at the K&N typhoon kit and the Cobb SF kit. According to the Cobb it is MAF friendly, not sure about the K&N though.

I run the K&N and have used them for years without any problems, just need to be careful when you clean and re-oil the element, too much oil will cause problems.

Air filters ruin MAF's, a ruined maf will knacker the engine. Most won't install till they're running a FMIC and a ecu that runs a mafless set up.
A panel filter should keep you good up to high 300's.
Your best bet would be a K&N panel filter.
Take some advice from your mapper and specialist.

Strange how I have never had a problem running my K&N at 400bhp with a MAF!!!. I must be a lucky one or maybe other people have been unlucky as I know of quite a few who run them with MAF and don't have any problems

Which car bob?
Mafs are different on different versions and some are much stronger and reliable than others. It's the luck of the draw.
I think it is a bit of a gamble tbh. I've been strongly advised against it myself until I'm above the 400bhp by 3 different well known specialists.
I'm currently running a mafless ecu so I have no worries there but it's been proven that power was down when I changed to a rcm k&n air filter on the rr from the standard air box.
I will obviously be having one once the new engine goes in and the fmic etc.

2003 blob wrx sti type uk, running an sc42, 850cc, 3" milteck exhaust and the k&n with the TMIC. I fitted the K&N when I was running 300bhp in readiness for the higher power, been on this car 4 years now.

Sometimes when a few sheep share the same opinion it becomes gospel. 6x9's, lexus lights, stickers, roof vents, vortex generators, matte wraps, body kits, neons, 3 spoke alloys, black alloys, VTA's etc etc.

You can look on here till you find the answer you want, it might not be the right answer but you'll find it...
I am merely passing on info i've been passed down by specialists to myself. These people could have made more money out of me for parts and labour for the part i wanted and thought i needed.

Good point Markfey, I'll do a bit more research before I rush into anything.
I'll try and find out if some years are more sensitive than others.
I do appreciate everyone's input on this topic.

A little off subject, but a handful of people (seems to be mainly in the USA) have found that MPG went up with an induction kit on (not sure if it was mapped for it or not).
Maybe they got better MPG because the engine could run a little leaner?
I know none of us buy a Scooby for MPG, but if your interested in a induction kit anyway, it could be a nice little added bonus! :-)
Anyway else with an induction kit found they gained MPG (with the same style of driving of course!).
