Default Classic Sport "Tuning"

Hi there, i have been looking at some options for tuning my 97 sport. I am aware i will not get turbo power or anywhere near but I only drive a few miles a day so couldn't justify owning a turbo and I enjoy doing little bits to my car.

Firstly will lightweight pulleys for the classic impreza turbo fit my sport as some of the vendors state all models and some state just turbo's? Im only really interested in the crank pulley as this seems to offer by far the biggest gain.

Secondly, I have seen people mention using a wideband lambda and FPR. Im not to sure on the use of the FPR (anyone care to educate me ) but from what I have read about the use of a wideband surely it is useless without a programmable/tuneable ECU?

And finally, does anyone on here have first hand experience of tuning these motors? If so please let me know how you got on as i would be really interested to hear your experiences?

Thanks in advance for any help you guy's might be able to give me.

Cheers, Russ.

Right, I have made the connection between the AFPR and the wideband. Is this a viable/safe way to tune assuming its set up by a professional?

I had a sport a few years ago and the best advise I can give is leave the engine and ecu alone you wont make it any faster.

Concentrate one making it handle and look better.

You only need a wideband for a turbocharged car so forget that.

Agreed! We had a classic wagon sport as the daily hack, did the air filter and exhaust and a general service to make sure it was running 100% then just uprated the ARB's disks and pads.

Thanks for the advice guys. I do have it looking how I want other then maybe some different wheels. Its also on P1 suspension so handling wise I just want to upgrade to 2/4 pot front brakes and fit a rear ARB. BlueBugEye, which anti-roll bar kit did you buy/fit as Im not sure which ones for the turbo fit the sport etc?

Don't forget some decent rubber, probably one of best and often overlooked mods

In terms of the engine I have managed to get 134bhp out of mine from a panel filter, sports cat and WRSport backbox. You just won't get much from these engines without serious modifications.

In terms of the handling, it seems you are going down the right approach. I went for the V5 STI suspension with a Whiteline rear ARB, 4 pot front brakes and a rear disk conversion.

Now, to fit the rear ARB you will need the lower arms from a turbo and the pivot mounts for the ARB. The fixing holes are all there as the chassis' are all the same whether it's a turbo or a sport. You only really need to go up to a 22mm ARB.

I had one years ago that i modified, full decated system and exhaust manifold helped, although i would get a sports cat not decat, 100 cell.

What about fitting the heads from a turbo car? Custom cams, head work, higher compression custom map?

The japspeed headers for the na impreza look pretty good why not enquire about them, also complete decat system would unleash everything it has to give.

Imho anything over 150bhp is gonna cost you some serious beer tokens

CrewJ, was that from a 115bhp or 125bhp motor? Also did you do any modifications to the induction or just the panel as the standard piping looks very restrictive!

Does anyone know where I can get a 2.25" sports cat? I will have it welded into a custom mid-pipe and cat pipe rather then paying at least £200 for a sports cat pipe alone.

Also, what is the difference in size between the front ARB's on the sport and impreza?

Just thought I would mention as well that I have never know a forum as help as this! Thanks very much to everyone thats had an input so far. Much appreciated.
