Default Cambelt Question

Thinking of going to look at a v2 classic tomorrow. The seller says he's got loads of receipts but none for the belt doing although he says the previous owner had it done. From speaking to him he says cambelt failures on subarus are very rare! I'm very cambelt paranoid coming from renaults! I'd obviously prefer for it to be done but the car seems very clean which appears to be quite rare now. What's the rough cost on a belt change and is it true about the belt failures been rare?

Wise to be cautious about cambelt failure. Seems you have been bitten before by a Renault?

If it was me, and the seller has no proof, I'd get it done at a dealer or specialist. Water pump, tensioners, the lot.

For the sake of it an aux belt aswell - why not!

Maybe haggle the price of the car? If failure was common, I'm sure it would be all over this site with nasty pictures, but I never seem to see any.

I may be miles out here, but I would say £400 for that lot fitted, depending where you go. Be sure to get decent belts, genuine Subaru if it was me.

Cheers, Richard Henry charge £175 just for the belt doing so will look to have it done. In the grand scheme of things it's not a massive amount of money.

Be carefull of people quoting on a belt only, it's not the proper way to do it. I'd only fit a full kit including belt tensioner & all idlers aswell as a water pump. It's the only way for total peace of mind.

You can buy the genuine kit from ECP or markip off eBay for just over £200 for the lot iirc. And not as tricky as renaults todo so if your good with spanners then can save a bit.
