Default Movement from steering column

Was removing / fitting the new wheel the other evening and discovered "telescopic" type movement from the column

Car is MY97 JDM WRX

Is this normal? i had no idea these were adjustable ?? or are they not and its just broken ?

i have about an inch of slide in and out of the splined shaft up the inside of the steerin column itself?

Any input appreciated as i havent come accross this before

If it moves in and out freely with the wheel fitted with no way of locking it in position, that is not adjustment but rather a fault.

yea its def not right, it not adjustment but im not sure what has caused it and whether its fixable ? jst wondering if anyone has come across it before.

I was fitting a new wheel and put it on for a test fit, then as i was takeing it off , cave it a wiggle and the whole shaft slid toward me,
