starter signal fault, code 12?

Default starter signal fault, code 12?

hi, i have a 96 v3 import wrx, and i have started to get issues with it starting, it can sometimes take up to 5 mins, removing the key, reinserting then all of a sudden it starts like there was no problem, i have checked the codes and i am getting fault code 12 = starter signal fault. where shall i start looking? is it common. thanks in advance

Thank you very much. Am I wrong to assume that troubleshooting this would be relativity the same between obd1 and obd2?

Just to follow up on this topic. I had my coolant temp sensor replaced and it's been starting perfect ever since
