An engine can let go at any point without prior warning. Just have to put it down to bad luck and move on. As mentioned, good excuse to build it stronger if you plan on keeping it for awhile.

my blob wrx had an sti 8 bottom end brand new fitted to it in 2008,ran at 265bhp for 5 years with regular oil changes, had it mapped when it turned 40k and it big-ended as we drove out of rcm.................not happy
bought a used engine from matty5br who trades on here and been good so far, hopefully problem free while i build my other engine

sounds top-endy to me.
I could be wrong tho. maybe a fooked lifter? is the noise there all the time or does it go away when hot etc?
sounds like its making the noise when being revved, not on deceleration

Have you ad any luck m8?? Sounds similar to mine, does it when revved and not on deceleration. Ive had suggestions from general mechanics ranging from turbo, uppipe, cam belt tensioner and bottom end!!

I'm having mine looked at later today by a guy who rebuilds them local to me so should have a definitive answer on mine later m8, I'll let you know how it goes, fingers crossed...........

Just got back from holiday and my dad has taken the car over to a specialist in bore ham who's done a lot of these.
He's said new uprated pistons, reborn, new shells, new oil pump and maybe exhaust valves but engine is in good condition
A very rough estimate of £2000 so I'm quite pleased with that, he's going to start it in a couple of weeks.

I did say that but he reckons the rods are strong enough that are in there, he said what I'm having done is easily good enough for 340-350 and that's more then enough for me.

You want new rods and a new crank as well, you also need to find out the REASON it let go, because there is always one, which could be anything from oil pick up pipe snapped to fuel starvation, but putting it back together without knowing the cause is asking for trouble.
How were you driving it at the time, what fuel were you using and how much was in the tank, what mods do you have.

Yeah I definitely want to know the reason it went! But he should be able to tell me that once it's apart.
We said to him I've had 3 classics and this hasn't happened to one of them and they've been driven hard but he said the new age are different and more common to go.
Why will I need new crank and rods?

Engine issues
Id personally get it to one of the tuners on here Api,enginetuner,s.clinic and get them to have a look and do the work. It sounds like ur going to end up doing the job twice if you go with the option of ur dads guy.

Because thats where the bearing shell has spun and will have damaged the faces as well as the fierce knocking and wobbling that will have been going on whilst it was being driven.
Myself and many others as well as all the good engine builders on here would never re use standard rods and crank that had been subjected to a failure.
I'd also get an EXACT quote as I think it sounds a bit on the cheap side to me.
Who exactly is doing the work.

Ok thanks I will definitely look into that. He has a place in boreham pretty much next to extreme scoobies, he has done hundreds of rebuilds on imprezas.
A guy with a Litchfield blob recommended him to me, built his up after it went but that was £5000.

Saw this, never heard of bgv and was quite interested as he seems to do machining work too.
Then did a google "bgv engineering subaru" oh dear not that much good news...
Every builder has the odd issue but not many positive things for this bloke e.g engine failing after 500 miles with oil contamination

After waiting quite a while due to him being really busy, bob at bgv has got my engine stripped down. Im now having forged pistons, forged manley rods, acl bearings, crank regrounded and nitrided and a set of stainless exhaust valves, obviously the cylinders will be bored out too.
This has now made me want to go for big power, I can see how you can spend a lot of money on these cars now!!
