Also interested in views on this, I want to do it and was thinking of importing a gated up-pipe from the US if they can be used on r/h drive cars?

Grimmspeed do an uppipe that has an external wastegate and small screamer pipe but I don't think iy fits RHD.

To do it properly?

It will cost a fair bit as you will need a non gated turbo, external wastegate, screamer, modified/after market manifold etc etc.

On my old sierra the screamer exited just behind the n/s/f wheel. Grannies loved it fpmsl

This is doable. We run external wastegate conversions on our drag/street turbo bikes. In essence you gut the internal wastegate out and modify the turbine housing. Plus a few extra tricks. Not done correctly this cause boost issues so you need to be careful. Done correctly it works very very well. Here is an example on a turbo'd GSX1400

Given the effort depending your turbo it could be easier to change the turbine housing for a non gated item. You can then either mount a wastegate off the up pipe or modify the turbine to take the wastegate but externally mounted.

how does that setup work then?

as usually the wastegate needs to be before the turbo to bleed off the excess exhaust gas, not after the turbine wheel?

I take it from that pic that the external is being fed from the turbine housing just how the normal wastegate would be? so in effect, pretty pointless other than looking good lol?

As above in US few companies(Grimmspeed) making EWG for standard location turbo, but they will not fit our cars

I will speak with Gary/Gazza@GR Performance about this, maybe he will able to make something to do

But still if you are thinking go on IWG(Internal waste gate)turbo with EWG setup,I would say you will be wasting the money, yes will sounds awesome and will cost you more

If you want to do properly get rotated kit with turbo plus wastegate and you can have great setup

It allows you to run a far larger diameter port for the gasses to be extracted over the standard wastegate 'penny' and far greater and more accurate boost control . The wastegate in this set up is pre turbine wheel as it would be with the standard internal waste gate. Please be aware that there are modifications made to the internals of the turbine housing when this modification is done. It doesn't vent exhaust gases that are post turbine wheel. Also you would not be able to use an open neck or bell mouth down pipe with this set up.

I did think about your setup after i had posted seventune, and concluded that there must be some modifications to the turbine housing to make it work. so ill let you off that one lol.
