Default Engine cut out - lost power and died & wont start

Hi Guys,

ok i picked my 1997 turbo 2000 up a week ago,
it started over heating,
towed it home & apperently cylinder 1 is running at 30% pressure
i changed water pump & re-timed it to see if the pump was causing overheating issue ( CEL came on too )

it wasnt the pump as it still does it although there was a leak which ive now fixed

it drove longer the last time i drove it before it lost power while i was slowing down for traffic lights then died and failed to start back up

Got towed home by RAC and i've reset the ECU, still wont fire up

Besides spark plugs is there anything else i can check
love this car but really dont want to have to spend a fortune replacing parts which aren't the issue

any help would be great before i go halfords to buy some spark plugs
cheers

can you hear the pump prime ? to rule the immobiliser out,
if so a cam or crank sensor failure can stop the car starting.

Id say crank sensor is worth looking at are you getting a smell of fuel when you try to turn it over

Cylinder one at 30%? 30% of normal? Sounds like headgasket and/or major problem with that cylinder. What were the results of the compression test on the other cylinders?

cant find MOT offhand, however seem to recall cylinder 1 running at 30% compression and all others were normal

OK, well if it's at 30% compression you, at the very least, need to take the heads off and inspect. Very much sounds like head gasket has gone, and you *may* need other parts replacing too depending on the reason for the failure.

Best ask a reputable Subaru specialist, but it's an engine out job so labour will soon rack-up. You may then need heads and block skimmed so I would suggest £1000-£1500 as a ballpark unless you do it yourself (parts are the cheap bit lol).

Only thing with second hand engines is that they, too, are an unknown quantity, and plenty of horror stories about so-called refurbished engines that are anything but!

However, see what your garage says before panicking. Or, seeing you are in Coventry, you are very lucky as API Engines are on your doorstep - they have a very good reputation and will not bullsh!t you. Give them a call.

Is it losing water or temp gauge going up too high etc, I mean what are you seeing in the overheating? Also you can read fault codes yourself by joining wires under dash and counting flashes (quick search on here for how too).

If you fill the header tank with water and crank the engine over with cap off and water shoots out you can safely say the head gaskets gone.
