Default Blobeye WRX - max safe power/torque? What mods for 320hp+?

Afternoon,

I owned a classic Turbo 2000 about 5 years ago but since have had a number of Evo's so im a bit out of the loop with regards to Subarus. Ive done a search but couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. Im currently on the lookout for a nice blobeye WRX, with an aim to maybe slightly modifying this. What is generally regarded as a 'safe' level of power on the Blobeye WRX's? Enging, gearbox and clutch? Is around 320hp possible with ease, and generally what modifications are required to get one to this level?

Cheers

N320bhp is quite easy to be achieved on a WRX, but there are things that you will need to change such as:

Turbo- the standard TD04 will only achieve around 290bhp at max, so you will probably have to upgrade to an STi turbo.

Injectors-same thing the standard 380cc will only achieve 280/290 so either 440 or 550 STi pink injectors will need to be fitted.

Exhaust- The standard WRX exhaust is very restrictive so upgrading to either a De cat or sports cat will be ideal.

Air filter- upgraded ones are fairly cheap

Remap- so that all these mods are running properly the car will need to be remapped.

The standard intercooler can handle the power but if you come across a cheap STi one, it wouldn't hurt purchasing one.

To get a WRX to 280/290bhp is fairly easy and cheap but when you go over 300 your budget starts to increase

If you are going to spend around 4-5000 on a WRX you might as well wait for a nice STi to come about, as due to hard times you can pick some nice examples up for a low price.

Hopes this helps you come to your conclusion

Regards,

Subaru Collector 555

This will get you into the 320-330bhp bracket and keep it MOT friendly:
- STI Pinks (550) - £80-100
- STI Top mount intercooler - £80-100
- vf35 Turbo £250-300
- Panel air filter £30
- Prodrive sports cat, decat centre and matched cat back exhaust - £200-300
- 3 port boost solenoid £40
- ECUTek / Open Source remap (I'd recommend JGM but I'm biased )

Add an STI inlet to run TGV-less and this can get up to 350bhp out a vf35, like my old bug WRX, but even on 320'ish you'll trounce a standard STI.

You can stick a vf34 (tend to be overpriced for what they are) or an 18g on the car for a bit more but any further and you're pushing the capabilities of the standard 5 speed gearbox.

As said above, an STI is an easier route if you think you'll be heading for 360+ bhp in the future, although I'd recommend looking at the later examples with the wider track as these are widely acknowledged as having one of the best and strongest engines Subaru put in the UK models.
