Default Uk Turbo Hesitating

Hi guys, new to subarus and new on here so first of all hello!! And Help!! Ive bought a 99 uk turbo 2000 2weeks ago, got a hesitation problem between 1500-2800rpm, soon as the turbos in it is fine, its mostly noticeable when engines cold but still there when warm, and smells a bit fuelly, ive read a few threads on here about the afm but i checked the afm and checks ok, no faults stored, no check engine light on, im thinking maybe lambda probe, anyone else had anything similar? Cheers.

Hi & welcome !

I think you'll find it's a common trait with these years 99/00 - I raised the very same question about 2 years ago when 1st got mine !

It feels to slightly hold back when on light boost between 1800-3000rpm.
I have forgotten the technical reason for the issue & got to live with/around it

Best though to still get it checked, incase there is a problem somewhere.

The AFM is fragile & sometimes won't throw a code - best to be safe & get a new one, they're about £100 for a genuine one. DON'T get an aftermarket one - I did & it caused me more issues than the old one !

Stay off boost when the engine is cold would be my first bit of advice.

What mods are on the car? Has it been mapped?

I've read its a common thing now, ecu problems people are saying? I think i may have to get it on a dyno and see how its running, maybe a map. Its not been mapped that im aware of and only mods are a fresh k&n panel filter and a cat back vortex exhaust, did cambelt and plugs and service when i got it but it hasnt improved it.

Plugs, coil packs / leads, boost solenoid or MAF are the usual things that spring to mind - the latter is more a problem for classics.
What did you gap the plugs to when you replaced them?

No it's still not sorted, re-checked the fault memory again and nothing stored, did a ecu reset and found a perished vac pipe so replaced that too but its still the same, im going to get it down to scoobyclinic soon as i can i think

Not sure whether it's possible on your year but I have just recently gone the MAFless route via graham at engine tuner, he is based in wrexham and I will not be looking back, the engine purrs like a kitten and runs anabsolute dream! Pulls all the way to the redline and then keeps on pulling on a newage sti motor.
No more worries about boost leaks or blow off valve issues (I'm running dumpvalvless so no worries anyway)
Definite thumbs up to him, don't think he gets the credit he deserves with the usual mappers getting all the brownie points.
Not that there is anything wrong with the other guys I just think credit where credit is due.

youd be better off taking your car to get it health checked somewhere (by a subaru specialist) im sure there must be someone localish to you - likes of scoobyclinic is near sheffield

no point getting all signed up for a map to find you have underlying issues somewhere else

if all your hesitation is, is just a very light hesitation when on slight/partial throttle then its just a trait of MY99 cars. been through it all before with mine when i had it
