Which blow off valve? WRX STI
Not had a half decent turbo car for a while and I am sure these were called dump valves at one time...
I have a 56 reg WRX STi and looking for a nice sound when I lift off the throttle (something a bit chattery), do people still fit these or are they thought of as a bit tacky these days?
Will an open are blow off valve make my car think there is something wrong as the air should be recirculating back into my engine?
Any thoughts, advice and opinions appreciated. If any links could be given to youtube so I can hear what they sound like it would be a bonus .
Cheers
Billy

LOL I know whats coming up on this thread, Chav Chav Tacky Tacky Waste of Money blah blah...
I know what you mean about wanting one and the sound. Mine has a baileys one fitted but it was on there when it was re-mapped and so doesnt affect the running.
It sounds great, not too loud but i can hear it which is fine for me. There are some really awful sounding ones out there though.

To be fair the guy has asked politely and already given you lot the open door to call him a chav ****.
That aside .......
Any form of vent to atmosphere dump valve/blow off valve on a MAF equipped car isn't the best of ideas. Your ECU thinks it has just ingested x amount of air and throws in y amount of fuel based on that MAF reading. Between gears changes you chuck some of that air out of the system, yet your car is still expecting that amount so you're in effect over fueling at that point.
The "sound" a VTA valve gives is a personal choice. The chirp is effectively compressor stall and nothing to do with a dump valve. Removing the DV will increase any possible compressor stall (what the DV is meant to circumvent) and thus the noise that goes with it.
A happy medium is to retain the OEM recirc and fit an induction kit, as that will amplify the inlet noise and any re-circ action.
My work and good deed for the day is done.

TBH, how it makes the car run seems a bit hit and miss - I've run the factory recirc, forge and turbosmart VTA and without one all together with both the TMIC and now a FMIC and it always seems to run fine - I admit it will overfuel slightly but not enough to concern me.
And yes, I'd love to get my hands on another Nova but have you seen the silly moeny people are asking for them - they seem to think they're collectables

Don't do it, I used to have an HKS SSQV cos I went through the "get a dump valve" phase cos they sound cool. Truth is, they do affect performance as already mentioned and it depends on personal preference but I got bored of the noise and took it off. Haven't looked back since. I just felt like a bit of a tool driving round town constantly hissing like a bus. Besides, it's only a turbo, most cars have them these days, even diesels, you don't see many people putting dump valves on their ford mondeo turbo diesels.
Spend your dosh on something better for the car.
