2.5 engine tapping
Hi all
I have a 07wrx and have started to notice a fairly faint tapping noise coming from the passenger foot well area however when u lift the bonnet you cannot hear it.
I would say it's engine related as you can only really hear it when stationary the speed of the tapping increases with engine speed.
I have checked valve clearances and they are good and nothing seems amis on the top end.
possibly thinking vvt actuator or pulley but i would have thought i would hear these under the bonnet also ???
Anyone else had this issue?
Thanks
jamie

VVT will cause tapping but you would normally get a CEL ight come on if it's not in the correct position. Piston cracking is a favorite, keep an eye on your oil level/blue smoke. Ive done 4 in the last few weeks.

You may have to get ready for an expensive bill....
mine "tapped" a year before it was bad enough to bring the misfires...
next stop rebuild or bin it.

Take a look at the timing belt tensioner mate, Ive seen a few of these either come loose or start to fail and tap a fair bit. there was a thread on here a while back were a certain dealer to remain nameless tried to cost the owner a full rebuild when it was only this i mentioned.
also check the up-pipe heat sheild for breaking away from the up-pipe
