Best way to check oil

Use the dipstick, check the colour, smell, rub some between your fingers (gloves) does it feel oily or sticky. As an oil get Older it will turn black with carbon and other waste substances. You ideally want a amber coloured clear oil. Oil will also break down over time and the hydrocarbon chains will be smaller, Lessing thier effectiveness, If in doubt just change it for the cost of oil.

i would check the levels in the morning, once a week, more often if you are doing a long trip. its a 2min check that could save you an expensive engine rebuild.
