Default gauge wiring

Hi all, in the scoob i bought there is 2 auto gauge gauges, one is mechanical boost and the other is volts. They dont light up and the volts one doesnt work. I had a look at the wiring an both gauges have 4 wire, red, purple, orange and black. These wires have been crimped together as if to link them up. on the volts gauge i noticed two studs have the positive n earth signs. Are the gauges meant to be linked like this and then ive just got to put a live n earth to these studs? Or do the wires need to be connected differently too? For eg connect each red to a live n yellow to ignition etc

Without knowing the gauges, it's difficult to say.

The two studs look/sound like the feed for the voltmeter, try it across your battery with a short piece of wire to each.

The other leads?

Well, on Defis, RED is permanent live, ORANGE switched live, YELLOW or WHITE is lighting live and BLACK is earth.

So yours COULD be:
Red: permanent live,
Orange: switched ign live,
Purple: Lighting live,
Black: earth.

Although, you understand, none of those are defineite. Only the black am I pretty sure of.........

The thing thats puzzleing is, why have + and - studs when there is wiring? Might just leave them and wire the wires up. And why would a mechanical boost gauge have exactly the same wires?
