Someone I know is using one of these on an Evo & he reckons for the money they cost they are fantastic. He's offered to get me one from America as apparently over there people use them on Scoobys too. Iv never heard of them, does anyone on here run one & what are opinions on these.

never heard of them, but just because they work well on a evo doesnt mean they work well on a scoob.

Aren't they diesel wagon turbos? I know a lad who was planning on putting one on a gt4 st205 but it was huge and he gave in as it was gonna be too much work, there's a short piece on them in this months Japanese performance mag, pretty much states they are excellent units but most suited to drag cars ect

I used to run one on my old saab. For the money, they're excellent. I was going to run one on my scooby as well, but the combination of size and turbo location and associated up-pipe modifications, external wastegate etc make it a bit of a nightmare to fit tbh.

In the end I decided it wasn't worth it on a subaru from a hassle/benefit perspective, but for other cars where the turbo location is "better", the turbo's are good.

One point to note, though, is that they're all huge. Most holset turbos will do 500hp or more, so obviously they will not be as spooly as a smaller turbo, but that doesn't mean that they dont spool as well or better than e.g. a similarly sized Garret.

Oh, my saab... It had the most ghetto install imaginable... The turbo came from a fishing boat ( ), and I had to modify the exhaust housing with an angle grinder. It also had the worst manifold in history, but once the turbo came on song (4500 rpm), it would have left my impreza for dead. 70-130 took as long as 0-60

Now, obviously, if you chose a better sized holset (e.g. hx35) with a small twin scroll exhaust housing (i.e. 14 or there-abouts, do not go for 18 etc), then it would work decently well. However, fitting is a bit of a mare as mentioned above.

I'm guessing a rotated type setup is needed, can this be bought or is it a bespoke install. Does anyone know any figures for these & advice on instalation etc.

Used to fit Holset turbochargers to tractors back in the day I was a diesel engineer.
Cracking piece of kit with minimal to next to no faults. Only issue we had with one is we couldn't shut the bonnet down. Compressor housing was enormous lol

Holset is now Cummins Turbo Technologies, its based in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. They now produce a smaller HX25 which may suit better.

The HX35 is designed for 6 cylinder diesel engines with capacities of 5 to 6.5 litres. So yes I would expect it to be laggy.

They're laggy compared to smaller turbos obviously, but if you look at other turbos that produce similar power figures, they stack up really well.

Skylines have larger capacity and would suit the Holset range better. I am not saying they are no good, infact I believe they are the best turbo's around. But to fit to an Impreza would be difficult and bespoke.

Someone on here must have fitted one. If the pipe work were straight foreward then perhaps lots of members would use them. Perhaps it's more trouble than it's worth on a Scooby. I understand it's a simple job to fit one to an Evo hence the popularity amongst Evo owners.

Cummins will not discuss petrol turbo aftermarket stuff.

The best bet IMO is to get a holset off the bay and see where it will fit. The servo stuff gets in the way on a uk spec car for a rotated setup, but you might be able to front mount it. Either way, lots of fabrication required, and there are no kits (I searched all over nasioc etc)

Sorry to drag up a year old thread, is no one running a holset on an impreza ej in the uk? Currently have all the parts to instal one on my impreza, once it's painted (two weeks time) I will be going about my third holset install.

A lot of people use the HX35 on BMW M50 lumps.

I had the HX40 (88mm comp wheel) on my 2.8 24v v6 golf, and I used an HX35 (82mm wheel) on my 2.0 golf. V6 was running 1.5 bar boost and the 2.0 was running 2 bar boost. I have the same HX35 for my impreza with a smaller exhaust housing. Cracking turbos if your man enough to run a lorry turbo. A few imprezas in the states running holsets but I've yet to hear of a UK one, must be someone here that's used one? I can't be the first surely

We'll done Boosted, I think you may be the first in the UK. I abandoned my idea of using a Holset & bought an MDX321T. I couldn't find anyone selling any pipe work or fitting kit & info on custom fabricating it seems very limited & vague. I'd love to see more info on your installation as I still fancy doing it. What power do these make on a 2L Impreza, my mates Evo puts out over 500 & cost peanuts to build.

The turbo I have chosen is rated at around 48 lb/min so it will flow around 480bhp, however I will not be running it anywhere near it's limit this year.
I will be fabbing/making all my own up pipe/downpipe, oil feed and return and modifying or making boost pipes to suit, but then that's exactly how I do all of my turbo projects. I will post a small thread on here once it's done to say that's it finished.
