Having bought my blob sti yesterday- today I went to fit my own head unit to replace the standard.

Pulled standard out. Drove car to buy adapter with no stereo in. Worked fine.

Came home. Plugged in my own head unit with adapter.

Turned on ignition- all electrics have stopped working. If I turn the ignition on the dash lights light up and the alarm siren beeps once.

If I press the button on the key fob at this point the red light by the clock flashes recognising it but the car won't start and the rest of the electrics don't work.

Car will not lock with fob I have had to manually lock doors.

Tried removing stereo again makes no difference.

Help please?

 

There should be a master fuse in the engine bay. normally bigger than the rest. about a 50A

 

Do I just remove it?

 

Try removing the battery connection for about 10 minits I had this problem with my classic and that solved it wether it will yours not sure but worth a try

 

Check it has not blown first. take it out and see if there is a big piece of metal contacting one side to the other. Sometimes when blown they go black in the middle.
Take your stereo out at the moment till you fix it. you could be shorting something out, which is worrying because the stereo fuse should have blown first. so before putting stereo back in you need to check what amp is in that as well.

 

I have removed stereo. Piece of metal in fuse all looks to be intact from what I can see.

I have removed battery connection will leave for 10mins then try again

 

Connected battery back up. No joy.

Checked alarm manual. Typing in code doesn't do anything.

Seems to me like a fuse.

Which one is it likely to be?

Couldn't spot a blown one by looking in the fusebox.

I'll check in the light tomorrow and take them out etc

If ones blown is it main dealer I presume for replacement?

It's the fact that none of the electrics work apart from dial lights when key turned on. Must be fuse rather than alarm?

And it should be one of the red ones 45Amp

 

My red fuses are 50amp

Checked all the big ones and the metal strip inside looks intact on all of them

 

ok not the fuse then.
Did you have the drivers door open while fitting stereo? if so ho long did you have it open?
Could be your battery in your car or your key fob battery

 

Don't think I had the door open. Not 100% in that though. Would this matter?

When I press button on fob with key turn on in ignition the red led by the clock flashes to acknowledge though?

And if it was the key fob battery surely the rest of the electrics I.e interior lighting etc wouldn't stop working? And why is the siren beeping once when I turn the ignition on?

Unlikely that car battery has died at the same time I was messing with stereo?

Had it a day and iv already broken it haha can't believe it

 

It dont sound like key fob but car battery could be.
If you had your door open, with the interior light on it could of drained the battery enough to pack up secondary power.
The siren could beep once to tell you there is a problem.
What alarm/ immobiliser have you got on the car?

Had mine a month and had trouble with insurance so been stuck on the drive so know what your feeling like. my gf keeps laughing at me because of it lol

 

Ahh I did have the 2 interior lights on the roof on while I was fitting the stereo. Only for 5 mins though surely that wouldn't drain it?

I take it if I jump start it that should work if the battery is flat?

It's the standard Subaru cat 1 alarm system

 

Mine did that when the battery had gone. All lights lit up on dash but once I turned key it would ring once on alarm. Check your battery.

 

I have just read up on it. the alarm chirps to tell you the heath of the battery. and its a sign of battery about to die.
Try a jump start. you might need a new battery.
I might start an argument here but they do say after 3-5 years a battery needs replacing.

 

Got a multimeter on it this morning and tested all fuses.

One of the little 15amp blue ones had blown. The clock fuse.

Replaced with a spare from the inside of fuse box lid and it works fine now!

Any idea why putting my own head unit in had blown the fuse? As I'm hesitant to try it again now haha.

Aside from the iso harness connector and radio antenna cable there is a small black cable with square clip on the standard Subaru headunit- that's clipped to a piece of metal on the side. Presume this is an earth?

Do I need to somehow attach this to my new headunit as well? As I left it off before- maybe this blew the fuse as no earth?

 

on the iso block there should be 2 parts. the one with red,yellow,black. make sure none of these have got any connections loose. they some times make it easy to swap red and yellow over. also on the head unit i always put tape on the ends of wires that i dont use, eg tel mute, amp.
if you got it working plug it bsck in and use the volt meter to see if its used. normally the one from the iso block is good enough

 

I'm having a similar problem, put a new headunit in and worked fine. Went to start the car later and nothing, clock fuse had also gone, tried to change it and removed the headunit and still blowing the fuse
