Which Turbo On 2.0, SC42 or SC46?
Right I can't make my mind up, I've read loads about both turbos and I understand the SC46 will be laggy on my forged 2.0 but how laggy?
If these turbos where readily available second hand I would be going for the 42 but seeing as its likely I am going to have to buy new it just doesn't make sense to buy the 42 when the 46 is only £100 or so more.
My current spec is V9 tuftrided crank and v9 rods, Mahle over sized pistons, acl race bearings, ARP studs and sti 3 heads. I'm not sure whether the engine will even put up with a SC46 for long but then a stroker kit is always an option if it blows.
Anyone had experience of the SC46 on a 2.0 that could or is it just not a done thing??

Iirc whitewagon man is running an sc42 on a standard sti v8 bottom end. Pretty sure he made good figures of around 500bhp aswell. Not sure of his complete set up but could be worth asking mate.
SC42 is a nice turbo.but what you really have to decide is how much power you really want and then get the right size turbo for that desired power level.if say your looking for around 430 then the SC42 would be the one but if you are looking more say closer to 500bhp then you would need a bigger turbo for that application, and with size is more lag and that's the trade off you have to make for more power,so really it's up to you.SJ.
Thanks for the replies lads, 450 bhp would be my target but I'm one of them people that gets bored very quick. I just want to be able to pay out one last time on this car and be happy with it forever but I doubt this is ever going to happen! Have got all the supporting mods already and car is undergoing a full resto, eta July to be complete so no major rush. Will give the clinic a call and see if they can help me make my mind up!

Stick with the 42! Spool is more important than peak power and the 46 is more suited to the 2.5 IMO.
Have you got an ecu with switchable maps? if so, a 42 with 20% meths would see the same peak as a 46 on VPower.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm also torn between the 2
I'm thinking of the 46 but concerned of lag, I want minimal lag.
The 42 will give me decent spool, but still not enough lol like t36 spool.
I want 450hp or slightly more like 460-480hp.
I'm going to add meth too, going on a sti8 block with jdm avcs heads and supporting mods.
Do you think that's ok?
My heads saying, 42 with meth
I need this choice to be correct for what I want and spool is a big factor, just wondering if I got a 46 with my heads, Harvey uppipe etc will the spool be better or is there a noticeable difference in the 42 and 46.
Anybody got any graphs on a 2.0 with both turbos to compare?

Sc38 billet Would be my choice and maybe some meth for a little more punch, 42/46 will be lag central circa 4k rpm before things get going on a 2.0L, you'll be wringing it's neck all the time to get the performance.
Sometimes less is more.
Sometimes less is more.
I never said anything about 450bhp, you're chasing numbers when you should be thinking more about how it drives, 380/420bhp with a splash of meth will give you a better drive, but if it's numbers you're after, go for it. There's a reason people go for more displacement at those sort of numbers and you're pushing the threshold going for 450/500 on a 2.0L without twin scroll. There's no escaping the law of diminishing returns, bigger isn't always better. As with everything in life there is a sweet spot and it's not 450bhp on a 2.0L.

I've got an SC46 on my 2ltr Bug. It's two cars in one: a nice easy town and built up area driver on low revs (3.5K and below), but drop a gear for instant power and it's a rocket once it pushes towards 4k and beyond.
Got a graph
