Default Clunk noise when reserving

Hi I have a 2009 wrx s and I've noticed whe I reverse with right hand down on full lock I get a single loud clunk fron the front that you can feel through the chassis!

Anyone had this before?

Can is standard I've been under it and cannot find a loose bolt on joints, arb or wishbone mounts.

Help

Hi, Don Clark on here may know about such things.

I see you're in Surrey. Have you registered with http://www.surreyscoobies.co.uk/ ?

Has it got DCCD? If so put it in to fully open when reversing or click the hand brake 1 click and it should disengage.

Mine and many others do it if you don't do one of the above, makes you cringe, thought I had killed the box the first night I got it home reversing on to my drive

Sorry to be a big thick but what is diff wind-up

Would that make a clunk sound that you could feel through the chassis?

Don't know anything about recent hatchbacks but if it's happening on full lock at low speed and clunking then it's possibly your centre diff.

Ok so have been running afew tests on this noise
It only does it when turning right
It only happens on full lock
It sounds like a something popping back into place

Any ideas?

I've had the same type off issues with a 5 speed wrx and a six speed STI with DCCD.
Basically, when you are turning, the wheels side to side and front to back want to rotate at different speeds.
The diffs allow this to occur, centre diff for front to back, front and rear diffs for side to side different wheel speeds. However being limited slip, the diffs are also trying at the same time to stop this from happening. So either the wheels are going to slip/skid on turning or the diffs are going to build up energy and then release it (ie slip) suddenly, making groaning horrible noises. If you have any mechanical sympathy, it is a bit distressing.
In my experience this effect seems worse when the car is cold first thing on cold mornings.
It also seem worse reversing, although this may be because I am more likely to use full lock reversing than when going forwards.
You might want to get yours looked at by someone who knows Subarus, but I am guessing you are probably OK.
ps I don't know very much about cars.

Your centre diff is failing.

c£900 + VAT from Subaru UK or (the route I took) a £50 secondhand one + £125 fitting.
