Hi

Simple question that may sound stupid but I don't want to get it wrong. Need to remove the battery and not sure what order I need to remove the + and - terminals in? Can anyone help on a simple question please?

Negative first as said above

If you disconnect the earth first and then accidentally complete a circuit to ground, there will be no current flow because the ground clamp is already grounded. any accidents then of shorting the positive terminal to ground will then produce no current flow because the current has no return path to the negative terminal

If you where to remove the live first and accidentally caught the spanner / ratchet etc against the body or any thing going to ground you can fry the circuitry on that circuit or any for that matter, where as if the earth is removed then as said above it had no completed circuit for the power to travel back to the battery

Whichever is ground first, so in this case, -ve first.

As above ground always first. For the reasons above and also if you do the live first and as said above touch the spanner etc to earth there will also be a spark. Could lead to the battery exploding in your face. Unlikely but possible.

lol il throw a spanner in then...... i always do it with the engine running then you dont loose radio code and clock time etc,

the only reason people say neg first is so you dont short car/batt out as is possable if you were to loosen pos first, as explained above

old skool way and have done it my self, but some of the smart charging systems wont have any output if the system doesnt see a battery so the engine just cuts out.

If you had seen a battery explode you would not do it with the engine running and maybe causing a spark which could ignite the battery gases, but it is your face and body.

how on earth does the engine stay running minus a battery?? once the battery is disconnected the radio codes will be lost.

I wouldnt do it on a modern car for loads if reasons.

But once the engine is running the battery is not really needed. The alternator powers everything. Keeps engine running, codes etc.

In it simplest terms the battery is a tupperware box. All it does it store energy so that the car can be started.

If you are competing in your road car you have to clearly mark the negative lead to your battery so that, if need be the Rescue crews know immediately which lead to cut/disconnect.

Once the earth is disconnected the electrical system is (should be) neutralised and safe.
