Default Some STi 22B advice required

Hi,

Long story short if I can !

I live in Spain. The owner / mechanic at my local garage used to race prep rally cars going back 20 years and his daughter still races locally, and though now just retired, he is no fool when it comes to performance machinery.

A couple of weeks back I popped in and sat at the back of the garage was an Impreza. Rally cars aren't really my bag and I could barely tell one Impreza from another, but I realised straight away it might be something a bit special, particularly when I sat the STi badge on the rear. Tony the mechanic didn't know much apart from that it was an Impreza.

Apparently the owner bought it in UK and had driven it around for a while but it wasn't running right so stuck it in a garage and 10 months later took it to Tony.

The owner seemed to know what it was, but nothing of the legal complexities of registering it in Spain so it still has the UK registration document with the previous owners details on it...... !!!!!!!!!!

I have taken some pix which are here :

https://picasaweb.google.com/jhcrisp/SubaruSTi22B

From pix I found online I have just found out where the 'serial' number plate is inside but need to go back to check which number it is.

As far as I can tell it is a genuine car though I'm not so stupid to realise that there must be plenty of fakes passing themselves off. You can see the chassis and engine numbers in the photos. I believe it is an import via Ireland so the UK registration number is not particularly relevant.

First question is are there any things to look for to check ? Most models I have seen do not have all the decals. Would they have been factory fitted or done later ?

Next is that Tony removed the engine & stripped it (he knew quite a bit about the engines but not specifically this one). I think if I remember correctly one barrel is scored slightly. The owner decided for the mileage he would be doing it wasn't worth repairing it ("if you can't afford to do it properly, don't buy it" is my motto) so has told Tony to bolt it all back together. Mad I know, but it's not my car :-(

Any ideas what someone in the UK might charge to do something with it ? Anything to do with cars here is outrageously expensive compared to the UK.

How much vaguely might the car be worth, even allowing for the engine ?

Lastly I have been looking for Tony for some details on torque settings for rebuilding the engine. I have manuals for various models, but my guess is that somewhere there are some specific settings for this particular engine. Can any one give me any advice on where I might get such details ??

Any other thoughts or information on the car / history etc would be gratefully received !

I'm hoping that when it's back together I might get a spin. See how it compares to the Lancia Delta Integrale another mate of mine has sat parked in my garden looking a bit sorry for itself at the minute cos he can't afford to sort it out properly !

looks genuin, stickers, dash (different to type r and sti) etc all look the part so either someone has spent alot of money on making it look right or its genuin.

EJ22 is right engine, rear decal, side decal (round silver one) are correct for a 22b. wheels look correct as well.

price is very dependant, 20 - 40k depending on history, any accident damafe etc

As above. Try 22b.com. There is a numbered plaque in front of the gear lever. If you give them that number as well as your pictures, im sure they will be able to sort you out.

Doesn't look right to me
Rear wheels made me look closer
Then vin plate looks like rivets are possibly not genuine as I thought they are stamped or have Subaru imbeddded in rivet itsself ?
I could be wrong and it might just be that I've never seen a 22b soooo mucky lol

Thanks for the replies !

I suddenly realised about the numbered plaque next to the ashtray and ran back down to try and grab a shot but Tony had gone home. I'll get some more shots on Monday and post them accordingly.

Not sure when it was bought but I can find out. Previous owner is still on the registration document !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Car is mucky, but looks far worse than it is - I used to be a car valeter in a former life so I'll make sure it gets some TLC before it goes walkabout.

Just seen the comments as have been busy.

Lord it's a small world !!!! Marv, I think you are spot on right - we live about 30 minutes inland from Valencia and I know that is where the current owner lives.

She will scrub up OK - as I mentioned, I worked in the trade and was a valeter for several years - I'll get some pix when she is done.

Question is, does anyone know the torque settings for the head & cams ??? Not had any joy so far.

Is it worth a call to Scoobysport or somesuch ??

Hi Everybody and sorry for the disturbs¡
I want to say excuses for my language, because my english is not very good.
I have read this post, and i'm very very angry.

I'm a owner of this 22b and all that i have had reading is not really,i think that John not speak spanish very well, and i don't understand many words.
The car are in very good condition, are much better that the car was in Uk,but much much better. The car don't have any oxid, all that the car in Uk are many oxid due to the weather.
All that the photography was made without my knowledge and my permission.
First i want to say, that when i bought the car i knew that type of car i was bought,I was looking a 22b and i knew that this car is a Subaru Impreza 22b original.
Is really that the car it appears very very dirty, but the car was in the workshop more of 6 months.is not possible that i clean the car, when the car don't have a engine. The car was in the workshop of the FATHER of my GIRLFRIEND,becuse he said me that he could repair the car if i didn't have hurry. It's a very good mechanic and he worked with rally cars and Porsches,Jaguars,Minis...
The car from to arrive to uk,not has crossed more of 2.000kms,(not miles),and the car arrives to Spain in December of 2010 and i was clean all the oxid,i was remove all the bolts i was change the timing belt, the tensioners, the water pump, the thermostat, the head gaskets, the oil engine, the oil filter, the oil differentials.I have mounted a front kit ap racing, with disc, pads and calipers and i have changued the rear discs and pads.I have clean the interior of the car and the engine.
The car now are very best, that when was in uk.The car ever are in garage, and in my city, not rain, not snow, not make cold and it ever exit when the sun is shining.
The car are very good repair,in this moment i talked with the father of my girlfriend and he say me that i had to make.Is not problem of money, because he don't chargue me nothing for the workforce, everybody knows that the expensive of this car is the workforce.
With this i want to say that the car is in very good codition.i'm very sad,for all that i can read.
This is my third Subaru, before i had a Subaru Impreza wrx 2003(not bug eye) and then a Subaru Impreza STI 2006 with DCCD,and i sold this last for to buy my dream a SUbaru Impreza 22b.
I'm a subaru fan and a rally fan.In this moment i have in my garage a Ford Escort Cosworth T28(white) and a Mitsubishi lancer Evolution Tommy Makinen Edition (red). With this i want to say that i love the rally cars and never i had a car in bad condition.
The car has the colin Mcrae decals, because is my favourite rally driver and is my little honoring for the best rally driver of me.And when i was tired of the decals, only i have to remove the decals and clean the car or polish the car.
The car has got a replica wheels of wrc in 18" and the bbs original are in my garage. Can you see the photo

And this is the car with the engine now(only that i don't like very much are the hoses, but is a present of a good friend)

Sorry for the disturbs and for my language
Many thanks for your time
Best regards
Pedro Gomez

Nice car mate. How do you get away with keeping it on British registration plates?
