Engine swap issue: Coilpacks not fitting properly?
Hi All,
I have recently fitted a 98/99 EJ20 into my 95 UK Classic. My engine used Coilpacks, I believe the newer engine used HT leads. The coilpacks will bolt into place, but don’t sit "flush" as they did in the previous engine as there is a different shape on the head.
Ive tried searching for coilpack conversions but cant find anyone asking a question of this problem.
Any help, massively appreciated, have a missfire that wasn’t present on the old engine and looking to eliminate the changes made from the causes.
Cheers
Rob

What bits have you used from which engines to put this together? If you are talking about coilpack change, then I assumed you are using the MY99 inlet. Is that with induction and MAF from 95? How does this fit with the inlet from the 99? There is a chance you old engine used smaller injectors than the 440's on the new one which would make it run very rich and *may* give a rich mis-fire. Whilst it may just be a coilpack not seating it would help your question to know what has been used from which engine.

Thanks mate and a good point.
Im using everything from the original setup, Inlet, Coilpacks, Sparks. It was literally a case of engine out and stripped of all sensors and swapped back over.

I guess the question is now whether the you can just swap the cam covers if the head design is the same??! Worth fitting new gaskets if you do, as they don't seal well at the best of times.

How did you get the inlet manifold to bolt up? a 95 engine has 4 bolts each end all in line. a 99/00 engine has 4 bolts each end but not in line. impossible to bolt all the bolts in this way? Also another problem with the 99/00 engine is the left inlet cam pulley won't match the original ecu and will need swapping over. The left inlet pulley is the one on passengers side at the top. It won't run right at all with the 99/00 cam pulley on there.
