Default open deck or closed deck?

Hi all, could someone techy explain whats an open deck engine and a closed one. As haven't got a clue? I have a blob Wrx.

open deck on the left closed deck on the right closed deck is a stronger block and can handle big power due to having less space around the bores if that makes sense

Thanks Craig. I would assume a std Wrx would be an open type and sti closed?

nope, sti's were either open or semi closed.

older wrx's had closed deck blocks, look for a cross hatch on the block that denotes closed

Surely though piston and rod quality would be the bigger deciding factor up to a point?

A well put together open deck block is good for 450 bhp anyway.

As above Open Deck block is not the problem,we are run Open Deck Block at 490bhp plus NOS.

If its Open Deck Block put together properly and right parts should be OK up to 500-550bhp
