Welcome
So any noises/holes in the engine we should know about?
Also where abouts are you in the country as your car may need (probably will need) to go to a speciallist.

Cheers for the reply,to be honest this isn't a very helpful post as far as diagnosing the problems concerned as it happened just as it got really cold and its been sat abandoned on my drive since so havn't had a proper look around but there is oil under the car and before it happened the car was running fine.Thing is i havn't had the car long and the previous owner wasn't a car nut and didn't know anything about engines or the mods or general history of the car.I prefer to start from scratch as much as poss so you get to know the condition of various parts etc but the car was pretty cheap and looked tidy.Mods are the usual tatt, full exhaust including 3" downpipe and a map,ive got a rr at 325..seems alot for a import wrx on standard everything, pistons etc, what do you lot reckon?optimistic or the cause of a melted piston?Cheers guys

the oil leak and cut out may be totally separate, imprezas do ship a bit of oil from a few places if not looked after,
you might try seeing if there are any fault codes stored in the ecu.

and it can be done without getting too cold.

cheers bud very helpful il give that a try. What do people think about 325 bhp, realistic?as far as i was aware classic non sti engines are limited to about 300 due to the pistons.I'm in portsmouth hampshire any good engine builders in the area?
