Default snapped driveshaft/cv joint on type r

car in question is a 1996 impreza type r

was just testing it after the rebuild and after a slightly over enthusiastic launch iv heard a bang and the car would not drive so i locked the diff and crawled it home so i didnt cause to much damage

on intial inspection the fault seems to be with the n/s/r shaft

you can rock it up and down but the inner cv gaitor is holding everything together so il have to find out exactly whats broke tomorrow

my main question however being is that are the shafts and inner cv's the same on the type r as they are to a regular sti or is it its own part or what other cars can i get the parts i need off?

it appears that the joint is still attatched to the diff so iv either sheered the end off the shaft or broken the cage in the cv joint

is this a common problem and why does it occur?

car is going to be given serious abuse round a track so i dont want broken drive shafts ruining my days out in future

cheers

how can i tell if my diff is r160 or r180 to?

if its an r160 i think il get a replacement fairly easy wont i?

but if its r180 it could prove more of a problem by all accounts

Type R STI will have R180. Newage STI shafts will fit without issue and are readily available

well i went and got a shaft today that i was told was from an r180 diff equipped car but it obviously wasnt as when i got home and paired them up it was totally wrong

my shaft is roughly 1mm larger diameter and the cv joint is beefier overall

i tried dismantling the shaft i bought today as i thought i could rebuild my cv joint (as only the bearing cage was broken) but the cage on my shaft was obviously larger than the one from what i bought

so now im back to square one and need to source a shaft with the same size cv joint to rebuild mine or another shaft from a type r or p1 i think or im lead to believe a newage sti either bug eye or early blob eye but its proving difficult to find one at the minute

so...

does anyone know what or where else i can source one from or does anyone have one available

cheers
