Default Simple exhaust question (if you have done it)

hi are the rear boxes just bolted to the centre exhaust section? or do subaru use captive studs?

The reason for the question is old fixings rusted solid so may snap off/require mr angle grinder to remove.... dont want to do this until after mot if its more than a quick replacement job?
cheers

If standard the center pipe will contain the cat.

As to the rear exhaust fitment they are nut and bolts, if they look seized give it a good blast with wd40 or something similar and leave to set in for a few minuets, use a 6 sided socket and not a multipoint socket it will give less chance of rounding the head of the nut, keep applying wd40 to it on the way out as it will make it easier, worse comes to worse chop the buggers out with a grinder and replace with new

Hope that helps bud, even if they do snap it won't cause a headache, if anything makes it easier I would always recommend fitting new nuts and bolts anyway apply a small amount of copper slip to the new bolts to help protect it from further rusting

No bud unfortunately not, even if you removed it and got your emissions under the stated regulations it would still fail on the new laws introduced, if a cat is fitted to a car in standard form it needs to be there for mot.

However mine had a full de cat and passed its inspection every year depends on what and who you know, for example if you had a resonated small box in the exhaust and was heat wrapped, them the inspector can not truly say it is not a cat and if the emissions are on it wi ll pass its test, there are many of us running full de cat systems and thy pass every year, get friendly with a garage

Also if you do remove the cat and upgrade the exhaust it should have a remap to compensate for the difference in flow rate, spool, fuelling etc if you want to make gains then doing it properly is the only way, as I've known people to loose power by sticking filters, exhausts etc as the car was not running optimised to the enhancements made if that makes sense so in essence was a waste of money and done bugger all until it was chipped on the management to see the increases
