Default difficulty fitting belt

My PAS/Alt belt needs replacing as the old one has split. I've ordered one from Graham Goode and tried to fit it, loosened the two bolts holding the alternator in place and slackened the tension bolt to the point where the alternator slides as far down as it'll possibly go. The old belt comes off easily, but the new one simply will not go on! The one on the car is a 5PK0877, the new one is 5PK0875 and the majority things I've found on Google say the slightly shorter belt should still fit, but I can't get it to!

Before I give up and send the belt back, is there something else I'm missing?

Winding the engine - not something I've done before! Am i right thinking that's just a ratchet on center nut on the crank pulley and rotate clockwise?
