what code reader to get?
hi guys, i was looking into getting a code reader for my 09 sti. any recommendations? i dont want or need to cancel any codes/warnings, would just be useful to have in the event that any pop up so i can decide if it needs to go to subaru (which it probably would as i hate working on cars! i would rather pay someone else to scrape their knuckles etc!) or pay my bro to sort out any small issues! thanks in advance.

This is the one i went for in the end. no problems upto now. used on my blob sti, mates ibiza fr, his mrs ibiza 1.4 and few others. Tells you the code aswell as the problem so you dont have to look the code up. cancels em light once problem sorted. does what it says on the tin.

Tbh i dont know what the disc is for. i havent used it or looked what it is. i presume its something to do with live data updates and what not. For my previous golf gti 1.8t i bought vagcom which came with a lead and a disc but tbh this code reader does everything that did without the need for taking your laptop to the car. And is much easier and lighter to use. just plug it in, select subaru off the menu. Once scanned, you can find out whether the em light is on, what it is on for, live data eg engine temp, rpm, speed etc. cancel em light once problem is solved. Saved me and a few mates garage fees

As above, I also have a cheap OBD2 USB cable for my windows laptop.
Came with software that reads all the codes, tells you what they are and allows you to clear them.
I believe it would also work with software like ECUExplorer and ROMRaider if my ECU wasn't locked to ECUTek, but as a simple code reader and clearer it's paid for itself many times over on my car and some of my mates
