Default 15W 50 Mobil 1 Motrosport Oil Okay?

Hey folks,

My wagon 2000 uk turbo 1998 S plate, with 139k on the clock is due an oil change.. I can get my hands on multiple quantities of the Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w 50 oil, and wondered what your thoughts are?

Any idea what grade i should go for? Or will this be okay?

The car has an uprated turbo, exhaust, 550 injectors and FMIC..

Any help greatly appreciated..

Cheers

Compared to the other oils it gets dirty much quicker. Also found that engine sounded more noisy with Mobil 15 50. Lastly a few tuners told me not use it aswell.

Any 15W engine oil will have very little initial cold start protection at this time of year and put unnecessary strain on your battery and starter motor at it tries to turn the engine through something resembling treacle.

Better suited to hotter climates!

Oil is meant to get dirty, thats how it works, by taking contaminates out of the engine (carbon in this case), but its the wrong time of year to run a 15 cold weight oil, you need a 10 or a 5 really.

Oil always good for a bun fight on the forum!

I'm running 280/270 on a UKMY99 Since 2001 15w/50 Mobil and she is still sweet as.

Last 10 yrs in Mallorca helps though

Frost what frost

On a stock car is ok. On a boost engine you can smell that oil burn...

I wouldn't put 15w/50 in my lawn mower. It's designed for low tech classic/vintage engines to fill up the void between piston rings and the bore!

0w/30, 0w/40 or more widely available, 5w/30, 5w/40, would be more than adequate, unless your using your car in Time Attack during regular trips to Knockhill!

5w/30 is the manufacturers recommendation for a standard WRX, for instance.

Probably not recommended for circuit racing, you're right. But then again, the oil best suited to racing ain't the best stuff for your daily drive!

What's the answer? Change to oil to something suitable for your track days and then back again for road use? There isn't a product that is fully suitable to do both.

You could buy a 0w/50, 10w/60, but the higher end of the viscosity range wouldn't offer the best protection when pottering about in the cold and snow!

The Mobil is a good quality oil, no problem there.

As others have said, 15w is not ideal for cold start in the winter, 5w or 10w is where you want to be.

ALso, check how old the oil is, as the 15w-50 has been discontinued for some time now.

Cheers
