Redline Shockproof Lightweight gear oil
Hi All,
Having a slight problem with my 6 speed on my 96STI in that gear selection is stiff when cold but perfect when warmed up, obviously worse in the cold weather. I'm using Millers 75/90 & have been advised to go to a 75/80 or try the shockproof stuff. Any advice on this appreciated.
Thanks, Richard.

Hi Richard
Is it the Millers CRX that you've been using?
75w-80 is a bit thin, but another 75w-90 might work better as 75w is a band rather than exact viscosity.
Motul Gear 300 is a little thinner when cold

The Lightweight Shockproof is a good option when the gearbox is crunching, but if there are no crunches, the 75w-90 GL5 NS is a better option. Personally, I'd probably go for the Gear 300 as it's a very well proven option for the Impreza and is a little thinner, helping the cold shifts.

I've been running Motul 75w90 Gear 300 for some time now (15-20k km) and it's indeed a bit stiffer when cold but fine once warmed up. Most guy's in the US (iwsti/nasioc) however swear by Subaru (extra-S?) gear oil as being by far the best option for the healthy 6 speed box. This was from guy's who have had the gear 300 before but feel the subaru oil is better. Problem is everything regarding oils and stuff is all "hear say" so all you can do is just try a new oil and see how it goes.
I've been contemplating on going back to subaru fluid but i wonder if i can get my hands on it ... dealerships probably don't even carry it down here.
