Default Heater cold, water temp rising in traffic until a throttle blip

Hi,

This morning and yesterday morning (both very cold) my heater stayed cold for around 10 minutes driving, and in traffic I noticed my water temperature going up from the normal halfway to the first upper notch. The needle was moving about a bit.

Once traffic moved a bit and I was able to accelerate up to say 4krpm it sort of cleared itself, heater came on warm and the temp went down to normal. Heater then went cold at the lights, temp moved up a bit. Once I accelerated away everything went back to normal for the rest of the commute.

The car is an 05 WRX, I can't see any coolant leakage, coolant looks ok in the expansion tank. I have heard the odd gurgle in the past from the heater matrix on start-up. Any idea what this is? I've got chance to work on the car tomorow, wondering if it's worth ordering a thermostat now to get it next day?

Any help appreciated.

Maurice

It does sound suspiciously like an airlock.
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, get it drained and refilled.
A search on here will find you the correct/best way to refill and avoid further airlocks, do it right, because there is no known way to bleed the coolant system.

If ifs a bad airlock say cold heaters etc
I would drain the system totally then start afresh filling from the highest point on the expansion tank ,, if it was a minor lock , try burping the system
