JDM STi Version 5 MAF Problems i think??

JDM STi Version 5 MAF Problems i think??
Just bought a JDM STi Version 5 loving it except it has now developed a rather weird problem
it will boost fine in 1st 2nd 3rd but in 4th and 5th it seems to hesitate at 3.5k and power surges all the way up i have always immediately let off boost when its done this incase it runs lean etc
ive had BMW's in the past that have done similar things and its turned out to be a MAF sensor but i know the subaru is completely different to a BMW!
how likely is it to be the MAF where can i get one for a JDM and some prat has fitted it with a induction kit i have got the standard airbox but i cant use it as the MAF housing has been destroyed to allow it to fit into the induction kit!
by the way the car is mint bar this recently rebuilt by Interpro (Forged internals) and is standard bar a HKS SSQV & HKS Decat back exhaust!
