Post Key or Alarm???

So I have recently bought myself a blob sti and the guy selling it only had 1 working key and supposedly a second "new" key that needed programming (£48 at Subaru).

Had the car booked in yesterday and the programmer said the key is faulty and will only half programme to unlock the doors but when you start the engine and let go of the key the immobiliser kicks in and cuts the engine. Apparently a faulty chip in the key means this happens?

Anyone know if there is a way around this problem if not where I can get a new key from other than paying subaru in the region of £275 for a new key and programming?

I did consider getting a new alarm/immobiliser system as it might be cheaper than buying a new key.

Advice or suggestions please people

cheers

Nic

The key chip for the fuel pump is different to the alarm imobiliser. Even with a new alarm the key would need progaming to the ecu for the car to start. You should really have a seperate alarm fob? If you have the pin code for the alarm? The fob can be coded pretty easily by yourself. New fobs are around £30 from ebay

Not a bad idea that if it works but surely the cut of the key wont work in the ignition barrel?

I don't know the pin code for the alarm although I think it was written on the paperwork from the Subaru garage when they looked at it.
I don't have a separate fob its just the key with 1 button on it that unlocks and disarms the system.

the fuel pump has a chip?

When i had my old bugeye wrx I changed the alarm/immobiliser from a sigma item to a Toad sterling one, I had only ever used one key with that and the buttons on the key themselves did nothing had a remote fob for unlocking the car turning the immobiliser off. When I got the new alarm put in I got 2 new fobs and they turned the alarm/immobiliser off and then I just used the key to start the car.
Would it not be the same again?

Aye but what I ment was to put the chip from the breakers on into your key? Or the key from yours into the breakers one?

As you say you kept the same key. So it didnt need coding. The alarm isnt a problem. Rip it out and replace with whatever you like. The car still wont start with your spare key. Yes there is a transponder chip in the key that shuts the fuel pump down. Unless ofcourse you have aftermarket ecu? There two separate systems. Although both imobilisers

I'd speak to a mapper. They can code Newage transponder keys to the ECU. Maybe source a secondhand, used key for as cheap as possible and use the transponder in that for the mappers to code to the ecu (incase subaru were actually telling the truth)
