Headgasket gone ?
Hello,
Sorry to be so rude and not introducing me on the proper way. But in the next few days, when i can find the time, i will
My name is Simon, student from the netherlands which is on placement in Ireland. Ashford Castle, maybe sounds familiar.
I always had a thing for turbo's, i sold my turbocharged mazda mx-5 before I went to ireland. Finally here, it's kinda boring to drive an N/A car.
So to keep it short and simple, i bought a scooby here in Ireland. Wonderful machine, well maintained, recentely resprayed and it has some nice mods.
Its a 97 model Jap import, is lowered 40mm and came with an full 3 inch catback exhaust.
Since a few days now, it started giving problems. When the boost kicked in, the top radiator hose blew. This is a common issue and can be solved easy. Just to make sure everything was fine, i checked the radiator and guess what, is was clocked. So after that was done, I finally hit the road again. 20 min later another coolant hose blew and the waterpump was smoking.
So I took it to a garage which are specialized in jap cars and he told me that the head gasket was gone, that's what i was expecting.
But even then, i doesn't harm to get some suggestions or info from the specialists here.
Thanks,
Simon

Could have been airlocked, which WILL cause overheating and that, in turn will cause the h/g to go.
I hope Dutch students are on decent money as you are now looking at a big bill: engine out.
While it's out, I'd be inclined to replace the bottom end bearings, which have a habit of going just after the h/g has been done.

Refill the coolant system by doing the following:
1. Remove the rear most pipe off the metal header tank on top of the engine, stuff a funnel down it.
2. Remove header tank cap. Put interior heater onto HOT.
3. Pour 50% coolant mix down the funnel, do NOT let it glug.
4. Once you see it fill up the header tank, stop filling. It has effectively filled from the bottom, so no chance of major airlock.
5. Now replace the pipe onto the header tank and start engine, heater still on HOT.
6. Run engine until fans kick in, watch for bubbles, mop up, or top up as needed.
7. Once fans kick in, switch off engine, replace filler cap, drive round block and allow to cool.
8. Once cool, check level at header tank. That's it.
Despite what you might read, there is NO method of bleeding the system if it gets airlocked, so don't let it: fill slowly as above.
If you suspect an airlock, drain down into a suitable container and start again, but if you did it like the above, you should have no problems.

Fill it slowly massaging the hoses, then run it with the cap off for a bit top up again, refit cap road test while watching the gauge, then allow to cool & top up again. Oh & have the heaters blowing hot while you do this.
