Default which 2.5ltr engine???

Hi guys,
i killed my 98 type r engine a few weeks after buying it, so it needs replacing and i'd like to fit something abit stronger. i wont be wanting more than 400bhp 400lb/ft
i like the torque of the 2.5, but which 2.5ltr engine should i go for?
and is there anything i should do to it before it goes in?
i want this to be as painless and cheap as possible!!! lol. as i might have to sell the car early next year
cheers
tom

2.5's as standard have major piston issues, they really needforged pistons as a minimum, if you want a cheap but strong fix go for a newage sti short engine.

std 2.5s are only good for 350 bhp to 370lbs as said 2004 to 2005 sti 2.0L is good for 400 / 400 with correct turbo & injectors

thanks for advice guys, and dont take this the wrong way but won't that be pretty much the same as the engine that was originally in it?! 2ltr ej207, suposedly good for 400/400, sti heads, revs to 8k, forged pistons etc....
seems like replacing like for like. unless i'm missing something...
just checked and wikipedia says ej207 wrx sti from 98 - present so one from an 04 should be the same?!

Many block differences and head combo's, if your plans are the 2.5 route then like WMS forged pistons a must. As the years went on the forgings got better and sti new age short blocks as said would be the cost effective route.

Stick with your 2.5 idea & mod your heads too suite, makes a great driveable/flexible road engine.

All the best with it.

EJ257 with some forged pistons! Great road engine and good for 400/400 all day long.
