Default 6-Speed gearbox retro fit in a classic to replace 5-Speed

Been away from the scooby scene for a while but a friend of mine may be looking at a replacement box for his P1..

It makes me wonder if the 6-Speed from later model cars is available as a retrofit option, basing this in part on the compatibility of the 2.5 bottom end on the classic heads and such, assuming the flange/bolts line up on the box and the casing is not vastly different.

What are the views from others on this - would appear on the surface to just 'make sense' if the box is coming out and gain a 6th gear on the motorway..

Thoughts?

I am going for a 6speed in the next couple months too. Been told you need box, linkage, prop and rear diff. May need more but I am sure people will say

make sure you drive a 6 speed before you buy and fit, i hate the ratio's. much prefer the longer 5 speed gearing. Its a personal thing though, hence drive one first

Also try both a UK 6 speed & a JDM as the ratios are different. Mines a JDM in a V3 STI & I love it, but I tried a Uk box in a Newage STI & wasn't so keen.
It's a personal thing though, you may find you like the UK box or even prefer a 5 speed.

Had a six-speeder in mine for three years, love it.

It's pretty much given that if you tune by using the 2.5 litre bottom end, you up the torque, so need the stronger box.
Or a lot of luck.
