Default Subaru 97 Having engine problems

Hi,

Not really sure what the problem is, just had spark plugs re-done and its still struggling, sometimes when im driving along it doesn't let me accelerate anymore, it actually doesn't listen to anything im doing on the accelerator and sort of completely dies, i can't really explain it. Has anyone had this problem before and can help me fix it?

MAF sensor is common. unplug it and see if theres a difference/improvement.97 should have the coil pack on manifold but might be at changeover (individual ones)

Sounds like the MAF (Air flow meter) to me mate.

Does it have an induction kit fitted by any chance?

dump valve caused you to run rich to often knackering the the o2 sensors readings (my best guess), this will cause the MAF not work right either i had i similar issue when my o2 sensor went bad, my MAF would try to calibrate then give up, it just stuck and 25% air correction and made it run like a pig when ever i used the accearator. this gave all the symptons of a knackered MAF but wasn't. go back to a recirc valve and try a known working MAF if same issue could be O2 sensor.

Can get OEM recirc valves from any subaru breaker will be cheap ish, easy to to swap back too. just check in the tech archive for the manuals

Testin another MAF will require someone willing to swap over yours with theirs need to be the same color (sticker on the MAF with the S/N) there are 3 i think purple (most likley yours), yellow and green could be more i'm not 100%

Checking the o2 sensor requires a diagnostic machine or a bit of skill with a multimeter.

Edit: i would suggest changing your dump valve with either a after market or OEM recirc valve no mater what the issue turns out to be should only use a dump valve if you have had a remap, else everytime you hear that pssst of the dump valve you'll be running rich killing the O2 sensor (lambda) and/or Cat.

When this fault happens does the rev counter drop to zero like the engine has been turned off then it picks back up again, or sometimes it cuts out all together?
If so then I'm having the same problem, and being a mechanic I'm fairly certain it's the crank sensor, just waiting to get my hands on a new sensor to confirm!

Sounds exactly the same fault as mine mate. I've had it on another impreza before too and that ended up being a crank sensor. I'll let ya know how I get on once I get a chance to replace my sensor! That is if it doesn't break down on me again and I end up abandoning it at the side of the road!!

Aye i have the problem, im half way driving and it starts messing about. then i totally lose it and it justs stops in the middle of the road, so embarissing and pushing is is so bad, considering the weight of it. Are crank sensors expensive? Heck at this rate i may aswel replace everything everyone has said in here

Sometimes mine doesn't re start straight away, it's a bit of a random thing. But it is getting worse, and has been getting harder to re start!

Hmmmm doesn't sound like coil packs (the bits your HT leads go in to on top of the engine) or MAF to me. Have you had any warning lights (the CEL) come on?

Read the following and see if any error codes come up http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p...gECUCodes#toc3

Do you mean:
You haven't had a CEL?
You checked the error codes and it was all clear?
Or you checked the error codes and no light came on?

CEL is Check Engine Light. This is a light on your dash telling you something is wrong.

If you read this link above it will tell you how to check for stored error codes. You don't need any special tools just connect the plugs under your dashboard and record the on off flashes of the CEL. That will give the any error codes

Okay, haven't had a huge amount of time I've brought a engine diagnostics kit off eBay (as i feel it will be useful in the future) once it comes i will pass you the codes that flag up
Thanks for your help

Hello

I very much doubt your ebay purchase will work. the 1997 Impreza doesn't use OBDII, it uses somehting called Subaru Selct Monitor. Unless you have bought one of them you are not going to get any codes out. As said connect the leads under the dash as per the Scoobypedia link above and count the flashes.
