Hi everyone, was driving home last night and I noticed a slight tapping noise from the engine, not very loud but still noticable over the exhaust noise..

Seems to stop when you come off the accelerator and then start again as the revs build up

Oils fine, always gets warmed up and cooled down.. However it's got a fair few miles on the clock.

Anybody any ideas of what it could be?

Nope no noise on idle, only when accelerating or crusing

Is it akin to a rapid ticking noise? The sort of noise you got when you stuck something on your pushbike spokes.

Ahhh hope your bottom End has not gone. Mine has and started like this.
It's hard to say really without having a listen. Pop on YouTube and have a listen to some clips of Impreza engine failures , specifically big end and bottom end related and see if it's similar to yours.

Do you have an induction kit fitted?

Nope no iduction kit, I took it to the local mechanic this afternoon and he thinks it's to do with the clutch, which is understandable, the cars done 166k and still has the original clutch!
