The engine management light has come on in my blobeye STi. I had the code read and it's the 02 sensor. At first it was intermittent but now it's on all the time.

Perhaps there is just a loose connection but also the sensor may have failed. I am about to take my car for a service and I have asked the dealer to look at the sensor. The dealer has never been cheap and I am interested to know how hard it would be to replace the sensor if they try to charge me more than I'm prepared to pay.

I have been quoted £100 for a replacement sensor from a specialist Scooby breaker. I don't know it that's cheap (it doesn't sound it for a used sensor) so I'd like to have an idea whether this is something I could reasonably do myself before I have the dealer on the phone tomorrow lunchtime telling me all the additional things they want to charge me for as well as the service it's going in for.

 

depends which sensor, they are 100 quid new from world car parts,
again depends if its the front or rear sensor as to just how hard but neither are beyond a DIY mechanic.

 

It's easy enough but get the correct size ring spanner as it'll be tight to get out. iirc mine needed a 22mm?

I paid about hundred quid for a brand new one for my classic one from Camskill.

 

Dead easy to fit mate a 22mm spanner and your done .£100 for a used lambda of a breaker is crazy .I recently sold a working lambda sensor on this site for £25.00 & the one currently in my car at the momment cost me £30 ,2yrs ago and still going strong.

 

The front sensor is a couple of hundred quid from a dealer hence the breaker wanting £100. The front sensor in the headers isnt si easy to get to. I was unable to get a spanner on it without removing the heat shielding which is a pain. o/e denso sensors can be bought new for around £130 from places like justlambdas.com or maybe its .co.uk. Cant remember. I havent looked at there site recently. When i bought mine it wasnt listed, but a quick call and one was in the post. Dont buy aftermarket if its the front sensor as it wont work. Buy a denso unit

 

I think it is the front sensor so I shall leave it to the dealer unless they ask for some ludicrous amount (although it wouldn't be the first time if they did ).

the front 02 is £100 inc P&P for a Denso, you need to undo the 4 12mm bolts for the heat shield but you leave it in place to get a 22mm Spanner on,
Its a 15 min job as Ive done 1 today

 

If the bolts undo. Yes its easy. I find they tend to snap or tear the welded nut out of the sheild

 

av got the same prob on my bugeye wrx 2001..came on then went off but now its staying on....av noticed the car feeling lumpy whens the engine light is on....

 

are the front and rear sensors the same? as im havin problems with my rear sensor

 

@jawiimpreza If your car feels lumpy it is likely that there is something wrong with the engine rather than the sensor. The sensor may well be picking something up. My car is driving fine despite the engine light being on. That points to a sensor issue in my case.

The cel light on my 2001 bug has come on,the obd reader says it is H02S Bank 1 Sen 2 Heater Circuit Low

Can anyone tell me if that is the front or rear sensor please?,I assume by rear sensor you mean the one in the down pipe?

 

Sensor 1 is the A/F sensor in the manifold before the up pipe
Sensor 2 is the O2 sensor in the down pipe/2nd cat pipe.
