It depends what power you are after/running. For less than 400 bhp your std headers ported & a uppipe will suffice. I have recently fitted a set of Harvey's ported headers and I can honestly say they have made a massive way to the way the car picks up. For 400+ bhp then a decent set of tubular headers will do . Pricewise 2nd hand units sell for £100 - £300

What he said! Harvey fettles the oem stuff really well and it sees good results for mid power builds!

Dont fall into the trap of buying too cheap with exhaust MANIFOLDS :-) (only the yanks call them headers by the way!)

The cheap ebay specials dont have properly faced flanges so you wont be able to stop it blowing gaskets, or the same level of slip jointing etc eventually they'll crack!

Also with tubular stuff, avoid 2 bolt flanges from manifold to up pipe!

Without knowing what turbo you plan to use it is not possible to give you the best possible advice. The choice of headers and uppipe has a big effect on the spool, crispness and torque of your engine so it is important to make the right decisions at this stage. Previously there were three main designs for my uppipes but there are actually 10 variations because obviously one uppipe for a TD04 cannot be the same uppipe for a 20G and that will not be the same uppipe for an MD321T and a bigger turbo will have a different uppipe all together.

The headers above are cheap enough but the uppipe is solid. I think the relevant question is how long before they split at the collector weld.

Harvey,

I am in the process of prolonging the life of the car by renewing all the worn bits, bushes, turbo, shocks, hubs etc etc. So I'll be staying standard and then having the map tweaked to suit but nothing beyond 330 BHP. It's just to keep everything fresh really. I am expecting to need them wrapped (?).

Your car is fitted with a VF28 as standard and if you intend to stay with the VF28 your best move in terms of imprvement and cost would be ported headers with a matched uppipe. On an exchange basis this is £369 plus £12.50 delivery. All DEI heat wrapped with five new Subaru studs. These are in stock now and can be sent out to you in advance of you taking your old headers off which have to be sent back to us within a 3 week period. We don't want the uppipe as you are getting a new stainless steel, slip jointed, purpose designed for the VF28 and similar range of turbos.

Many thanks mate. Once the engine is out I'll get them sorted. I have a few other "spends" first but it's now on my list.

Many thanks.

Yes. But bull**** baffles brains when the uninitiated lack knowledge and experience. It is unfortunate there is so much bull**** and misinformation on here but I think it is inevitable with any BBS whether it be Subaru, Evo, Porsche, Vauxhall etc. unless it is very narrow and focussed like for instance a particular Alfa Romeo site with members from all over Europe and shed loads of unbelieveable information.
