Default Sti Version 3 Heads

Just need a little help identifying the heads I have got the car is an sti version 3 red manifold chassis code says so as well but the heads I am unsure of. They have the under bucket shims which is right but the cam castings only run through the end of the lettering on the cams which i believe means they are wrx cams can anyone clarify this for me. Thanks in advance

This is a strange subject. The general census is the STI cams should have 2 lines running through the cams. I have a set of STI heads here with only 1 line, i have also found info from the net(and this board) where the one line on the cam has cropped up a few times before.

Seems like a minefield. I'm in discussion with a seller at the moment and have money waiting to clarify if his heads are in fact STI or not. Seller posted pics and codes on cam's.

Another user then clarified them to be STI "cam's" but then WMS (who i understand to be fairly knowledgeable about these things) said ...

I'm unsure of year but they are listed as V3 which i take to be around 97?
Am i right in thinking they are the "wilder" cam's but unknown shim/bucket set up. Also you may know have the STI got larger valves/ports.
I've come across a lot in the past which have claimed to be STI only to be told they aren't!!!!

From the info ive found the valves should have EH and IH stamped on them.

Have a look at this link...https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ay-a-game.html

One guy posts up near the end of the thread that the heads he has just removed only has the 1 line, the same as mine.....Mine are deffo STI heads, ive had the cams out and they are under bucket shims....The answer "could be" that the 1 line cam are Type R cams.....

As you say, its a mine field!

Are they larger bore than std valves? I can't get over them looking like they have the shim on top of bucket...

The valve codes suggests so and so do the cams......Does the seller know if the heads are under bucket?

No i don't think so. He was originally selling them as ordinary heads until it was pointed out they may be STI.

I Bought a set of heads from a v3 Sti that was being broken by a mate, it was a shock to find only one line through the cam markings!! But on inspection it had Sti valves and under bucket shims.. No one would go through the hassle/cost of changing cams and then re shimming to suit so guessed they must be right, I spoke to a guy having the same issues with a set of v4 tyre r heads he had, everything was right except only had one line..
I'll be fitting my heads soon and I'll post on here how it goes once mapped and see what the mapper says(I'll be using a Subaru specialist so they hopefully should be able to tell if response is right for cams etc).
Hope this helps in someway.
Ps. Looked about and there are a few cases of this, non modded cars stripped to find 1 line instead of 2.

I take it if they have the correct codes on the cam's then the lines or amount of them is irrelevant.
It looks as though non STI heads (Shim over rather then under) can have the STI cam's with 2 lines through them also, unless its an aftermarket fitment.

I believe you can tell by measuring the height of the cam lobes with a micrometer.
