Default Cams

Adzer just took a double look at those cams and they look like WRX cams although the buckets and shims are genuine STI.

In the pic below you can see the cams have to cast marks through the centre of the cam where the R4in r4ex etc etc are.

Would be nice if Merlin aka Mick could confirm cam type..

Quoted from Merlin24 post:

The head Castings/valvetrain/and cams are the same, although some of the late Version 4 engines came with the later single bolt cam belt tensioner(not head related though) - the difference is between the WRX and STi Version 3 and 4 heads.
It has been said that the Vers. 4 STi heads came with milder cams(lift & duration) but i have never seen any difference in the cams TBH.

WRX/UK Version 3 + 4
Composite Head Gaskets.
IDN/EDN Valves.
48mm Orange Coded Valve Springs.
Outer Shim Buckets 33mm OD.
LHB/RHB Head Codes.

STi Version 3 + 4
Thick MLS Head Gaskets.
IH/EH Valves.
56mm White Coded Valve Springs.
Inner Shim Buckets 33mm OD.
LHB/RHB Head Codes.

Hope this helps.

Mick

Si did sti3 cams only have the single cast line through the R4In R4EX?

As i know STI4's had 2 on each cam.

UK WRX 98 Cam below, as you can see the cast mark is to a side..

Below are V4 Sti Cams from 2 sets of heads hence a mix of cams.....

these have been sold to be via a car breaker and was removed from a sti v4 type r................

i'm pretty convinced the heads are sti's but now we just need to figure out what cams are fitted lol

would wrx cams fit a sti head and vice versa???

i thought you couldn't fit sti cams on a wrx head so would be the same other way around?

Adzer even after looking at JGM's pic it is apparent V4 and V3 Sti heads come with two cast marks through the cam code markings.

But the standard WRX cam cast marks are offset from the centre ( as per wrx cam pic).

But yours are single lines through the cams which are centred.....hopefully one of the other guys will be able to confirm cams but the rest seems A OK

Don;t forget Inlet and Exhaust lobe measurements will be different.

there's no onramps on hydraulic profile cams to take up the lash because of their self adjusting nature.

In fear of hi jacking your thread mate, this pic might also help to eliminate, or confirm any info, if this cam can be identified, it is in some heads i have, but no one can identify, let me know if you want me to remove this post.

The heads are still on the engine, it is a 2litre closed deck block, no 5th injector, but i am not sure if the heads are original to the block, the whole engine was taken out of an sti 1, but not sure if the engine, or all parts of the engine are original to that car, i just saw that it has the same stripe on the lettering as yours, allbeit a '3' instead of a '4'!

I cannot get a thin feeler gauge between the bucket and cam when it is off lobe though, which says it is not sti, not sure on the valve codes.
