Best oil for my classic
Hi I have a Version 4 wrx import done 55k, it has light mods with exhaust from turbo walbro fuel pump blitz sus filter other than that standard. Could anybody recommend which oil is best to use?? I have not had the car long and have been told when its cold it has piston slap, again what oil is best for this if it can be.
Thanks

Generally classics run well on a decent 5w 40 or 10w 40 fully synthetic. If you're experiencing piston slap then semi synthetic may be better or some fully synthetic 10w 60. Millers is good quality stuff and used by lots of the lads on here. Personally I would go in the middle and use 10w 50 and see if the piston slap is reduced.
Sorry should have said piston slap is reduced with thicker oil hence the recommendations.

You have piston slap due to the piston to bore clearance. Many forged builds intentionally run more clearance so when the piston is hottest it fills the bore nicely without seizing. If slap quietens when hot it is not an issue unless it is excessive. No oil will cure slap but for road use I'd recommend Fuchs/Silkolene 10/50 best price from Opie Oils.

My Classic suffered from piston slap when cold, disappeared once warmed up, depends how you drive the car to what oil you chose to put in ultimately,
I always ran mine on 10/50 in winter and 15/50 in the summer, Millers or Silkolene fully synthetic.
If you drive like ms daisy all year round I would put a 10/40 in there, If you track the car (HARD) then ,10/60
hope this helps

Im taking a trip to Nurburgring in may so would the best option be 10w/60?? I dont drive it hard and wont kill it over there but will give it a go. Once the engine is warm it quietens down but still a little tappy is that normal for subarus??

No don't use 10/60, for track use 15/50 will be more stable I'd go for Fuchs but Millers, Motul or similar will be OK. Don't skimp on quality here & change it just before & after.

Oil is highly down to preference and how the car is going to be used, dependent on temperature & load. considering your using on track too, a highly refined good quality oil is obviously needed, as for grading in order to reduce pistonslap you may struggle to lose the noise on cold start (if you don't know the engine it could be possible it is forged as forged pistons have a higher thermal expansion coefficient & do slap whilst cold as I learnt with my old wrx forged in Japan with no knowledge for UK owners), as long as the bottom end isn't knocking you'll be fine as already stated!
I'd recommend a good quality 15/50 with regular changes, doesn't have to be the most expensive stuff but as long as its quality you can't go wrong, to be honest if you ask around everybody uses different grades, everybody has different reasons for their choice, mainly down to the preference and budget. The more expensive the oil doesn't necessarily mean it's the "best".
Asking people what oil they use on Scoobynet is always a nightmare lol.

Hi
A 10w-50 is ideal for your car if it's driven hard and these are the ones that we stock.

Those are really good oils, absolute top of the range ones, so go with any brand preference you have.
A 10w-40 is a better choice for normal use

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS. As a cheaper alternative the Fuchs XTR, Motul 6100, Shell HX7 and Millers XSS are good choices.
Cheers
