Question Re: Turbo Function Test & Diagnostic

Just wondering if there is a place I could send my turbo for a diagnostic to see if its running properly?

> Trying to start the car and it wont start - it turns over, but doesnt catch - no real suction from intake. There's fuel flow and pressure and a spark on all plugs which I've confirmed.
> Towing it and popping the clutch starts it, left alone towing it runs sweet and true, but putting a foot on accelerator almost makes it cut out. No rev increase and no boost - I'm thinking fuel/air mix = too much fuel not enuf air as turbo is not sucking.

I've tried and tested EVERYTHING else and I'm stumped so come to the conclusion it must be the turbo, but would like to have it checked b4 buying a replacement.

The turbo wont have any affect on starting unless its completely destroyed and blocking the airflow. What does the compressor wheel look like ??. Other than that I would suggest a cylinder compression test.

A duff turbo won`t stop the car starting. How old are the plugs and what`s the gap?

The plugs are new and I'd love to do a compression test, but how? Without assigning my car over to a mechanic and thats my last resort.

I reckon the turbo has siezed as I've had many a bugger tubby and started the car, but if the impeller is welded it wont happen...

Compression test kit is about £15 on ebay, doing the test is only a little more work than changing spark plugs.

If turbo is seized its unlikely to stop engine starting. Can you pull the inlet hose from it and inspect the compressor wheel ??

Try disconnecting/removing your intercooler I think that'll be the easiest way. The engine should fire up then even if just briefly if it is a turbo fault. Unless you still have a cat on your up pipe that could of collapsed.
