Default Cooked engine

Long story short - I had a leak from my radiatior, topped-up coolant from time to time. It looks like thermostat got broken, in the meantime, and when I had a bit longer cruise engine must have got quite hot.
It stopped working, when I stopped on traffic lights, and I could not start it again. It was turning, without ignition. As per my observation it did not seize. Probably it got a blown head gasket.

Also, I had a bit of knocking (not very loud but distinctive knock) some time before it stopped working. It was not very fast, probably matching the rpm's, so I suppose the engine bearings got "caught" too.

I wanted to ask you for a big of advice, as I am thinking about two options.

One would be to do a repair. That would be, from the top of my head (and might miss something) replacing set of gaskets (75), skimming heads (?), replacing crankshaft bearings (75) + labor. How much, from your experience, would the labor (with skimming heads) cost me?
That would give me a rough image of a repair, that I could compare to option 2 - simply replacing an engine with another one.

I browsed a bit around market place and found Mattybr5 might have something I could use, for around 450 quid.

I have, again, no idea how much labor would cost to replace an engine (I suppose proportionally less in comparison to repair).

I would appreciate your insights on that situation and choices I got, and if you know any good value for a price garage around Macclesfield or Stockport, please do let me know.

BTW: I am aware I will have to include some additional cost on top of option 1 or 2 (oil, radiator, collant), but this is a separate thing.

Sorry to give you the bad news mate but but 150 quid aint going to fix that, crank will be scrap, pistons/bores probably scored if it got hot enough, will need a full engine rebuild,

Hi

If you want to diagnose fully you need to take engine apart and it doesnt sound like you will have anything to work with. If you can find a replacement engine that is warranted or you can hear running then make sure it is correct spec you have currently.

We have plenty of good condition used parts and ebay as you know is full of bits, feel free to contact if you need advice.

Cheers

Stephen

Stephen, that's right. Considering labor costs, and the chance of having scorched pistons, I'm starting to realise swapping an engine might be the only sensible option.

marshall332bhp, plan is to get back to stock performance, so I suppose the figures wouldn't be that high.

tyler120706, cheers, but mine's MY00.
