Default Cutting out...

Hi,

I have a 1999 Impreza (mapped) which keeps cutting out, been driving for many months with no problems.

AA called this morning, second time this week and they think it could be idle control valve.

Its clean and cant really see how this could break as there is nothing to it and replacement does not seem to be cheap.

e.g. this is only one same on eBay and looks in worse shape than mine - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Imp...ht_1518wt_1351

Any ideas ?

This morning I turn ignition on and revs to 1.5 which it always has then after a few seconds dies.

Starts for longer now but cuts out, tried just pulling sensor off the idle control valve and it starts and revs higher (can you drive around like this ?).

Please help as not very happy...

All the best,

Jeff

If it was running when you unplugged it, it should have stalled (ECU has been compensating for the failed MAF I assume). If it didnt then the MAF needs changing (ecu should be throwing up codes I work of thought).

I am no mechanic so might be wrong (could be lots of things)

Hope you get sorted

Hi,

Just started car up then unplugged MAF sensor, no difference what-so-ever (didnt stall or anything) ? Plugged back in whilst running and no difference ?

Would this definitely suggest MAF needs replacing ?

All the best,

Jeff

Just sold an idle control valve on ebay for 99p so keep your eyes open as they presumably don't make too much on there.

Un-plugging the MAF and it making no difference points towards a faulty idle control valve maybe.....

@phil1981 - No check engine light.

All - What to buy ?

Idle control valve ? From where ? This ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Imp...d=321660317962

MAF - is it this at fault if unplugging and no difference at all ?

as i said earlier try reading fault codes to see if it has any errors
http://www.jollygreenmonster.com/error_codes.asp.htm

If it just cuts out it could be something more simple like dirty filter or there could be an error code.
If you get no error codes less likely to be maff or idle control, but thats not to say it isnt.

If you un-plug the MAF and the tickover "corrects" itself, I would say the MAF is faulty and to replace. However, this made no difference you said.

Could be the Idle Control Valve, but may be something else? The eBay link you posted is the correct one for a UK Turbo 2000.

Maybe take it to a specialist to get problem identified properly mate.

Ok if i start it cuts out.

Unplug idle control valve and start - ticks over (if slightly high).

1. Does this suggest Idle Control Valve is broke.
2. Is it safe driving around with it unplugged ?

Hi All,

For those interested or that have the same issue after replacing Idle Control Valve and MAF there was no difference.

Reset ECU yesterday morning and covered a fair few miles and all good so far

All the best,

Jeff
