Default Help! Big problems!

I have a my98 uk2000 and earlier today I was engaging in some 'spirited' country lane driving (nothing too bad but I did get my foot down as you do) and a heard a loud noise. After that there was some rattling which got really bad when I went into second.
Luckily I wasn't far from work, so I drove it back and got it up on the four poster where it became apparent that the noise was coming from the gearbox.
With my less than amazing knowledge on things like this I'm assuming I've shagged the gearbox and more specifically second gear.
My question is what do I need to do to sort it out? Is it a whole new gearbox job? And is this probably a good time to go for a six speed conversion? And finally what kind of costs are involved for each route?
Thanks in advance people

Give david O'Brien a ring at APi.

He will tell you how much to rebuild the box, if it's possible, advise about replaqcements and tell you about the 6-sped route.

Genuine guy, honest as the day is long.

If David says it's so....it is.

Hi Daz I'd get it checked out first before you go spending any pennies if it is the gearbox we charge £750+vat to remove, fully recon and re-fit your box this also comes with warranty we are only down the road in Chesterfield.

Hope this helps

I think that's a bit above my price bracket for the time being then haha! I think I'll just be going the replace/refurb route then

Hi Daz, we can do things a number of ways, firstly we can collect the car so as to not damage the box any further!
The options then start from here; we can put a straight up replacement 5 speed in the car for you which we have off the shelf, this is the quickest option to get you back on the road. Other options include stripping the box you currently have and diagnosing the damage so that we could rebuild the box (after gaining your permission) this can include replacing any other damages at your command. We can also talk about going down the 6speed conversion route if you are interested!
David wont be back online or in the office until Thursday, so to get a more detailed description of the options available and for pricing please be patient and David will respond ASAP. If in the meantime you wish to call and speak to our Gearbox Mechanic about options please don't hesitate to do so!

Sounds good to me, I'd like to hear the pricing though as unfortunately cost is definitely a factor.

Aye, get some quotes.

My 6-speed conversion "kit" was £1800 off ebay, but that's 3 years back, they are cheaper now.

I must admit £2000 for a drive in drive out 6speed conversion is amazing value, I just don't know if I can justify spending that much at the minute, I might just have to buy a replacement 5speed unit and replace it myself. Bit gutting really, but needs must!
