Default Drone at speed-rear end?

Hi, i thought i'd post this here, as had no luck in drive train section.
This is a problem with my Forester s-tb auto. I get a drone from the back, as the road speed increases, it gets louder. Revs, corners, in/out of gear make no difference to the noise, so not a wheel bearing. I have been told the output bearing on the box can transmit the noise down the prop shaft when it's worn. Has anyone had similar? Could the prop centre bearing, or diff be a fault? Or is this going to be a case of throwing money at it, replacing a bit at a time until it's fixed? The output bearing is going to be £2-300. But if it doesn't fix it, it's such a waste.
Any thoughts?

Cheers, Mit

I dont understand your reasoning behind it not being a wheel bearing?

Have you at least had the car jacked up and tested it? Cheaper than throwing money at it.

I'd go for wheel bearing as well - sounds exactly like I had with my car. Noise wasn't any worse on cornering but as speed increased so did the noise.

Simply untie the kidnapped prostitute and remove from vehicle. Sorted.

I'd get the wheel bearings checked out too.
But I had similar on a MkI Escort, it was the prop-shaft u-j's.

Hi guys, i have tried the rear wheels, no play, or anything that would indicate they are worn. I'm popping into Api next week, to see if they can diagnose it, and fix it. I'll post up what they find. The noise only appears at 30mph and up, getting worse with higher speed. Thanks for your replies.

I had this on my (NA) Forester. Was sure it was a wheel bearing but the garage said it wasnt. They told me it was due to the tyres as i have changed the fronts at some point.
I didnt believe them, but in the end, cause it was driving me nuts with the constant variable speed rumbling, i put four new tyres on and the noise just went.

I couldnt really seee a big difference on the tyre wear either, but different brands front and rear.

Anyway, thats what it was.

I suggest you check your tyres, and maybe move front to rear and see if the problem changes. Then you can narrow it down to something.

Hi, had this on my 55 plate 2.5xt foz. Same noise, no play could be felt, until the hub was removed it became obvious that the seal that sits over the outer cv joint had worn away.
The inside bearing was dry and making the noise, after some time the radio was not loud enough to drown it out.
Done 2 on the old ladys sport, the last one the bearing had spun on the hub.
